Blood cultures and blood microbiota analysis as surrogates for bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis in dogs with bacterial pneumonia

چکیده
Abstract Background Diagnosis of canine bacterial pneumonia relies on airway lavage to confirm septic, suppurative inflammation, and a positive culture. Considering risks bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF) collection, minimally invasive methods like culture or next generation sequencing blood would be appealing. In dogs with pneumonia, our study aims included (1): determining proportion agreement between cultivable bacteria in BALF (2); characterizing BALF, blood, oropharyngeal (OP) microbiota if cultured from were present these communities; (3) comparing relatedness microbial community composition at all three sites. Bacterial cultures performed blood. After DNA extraction OP, 16S rRNA amplicon libraries generated, sequenced, compared gene sequence database. Results Disregarding one false positive, 2/9 (5 total isolates), 5 isolates (16 isolates). Based data, sites had rich diverse communities. Comparing genera sequenced taxa, ≥1 isolate their microbiota: found (12/16), (7/16), OP (6/11; only 7 swabs). Of 394 distinct taxa detected 75% 45% samples. was significantly different than ( p = 0.0059) 0.0009). Conclusions Blood are insensitive but specific for pneumonia. Cultivable differing degrees.

Bacterial Yield from Quantitative Cultures of Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid in Patients with Pneumonia on Antimicrobial Therapy
BACKGROUND/AIMS Early diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial choice are crucial when managing pneumonia patients, and quantitative culture of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid is considered a useful method for identifying pneumonia pathogens. We evaluated the quantitative yield of BAL fluid bacterial cultures in patients being treated with antimicrobials and attempted to identify factors pred...
متن کاملCytokine profiles in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood in HIV-seropositive patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
Concentrations and ex vivo production of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1), tumour necrosis alpha (TNF), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA) and TNF soluble receptors (sTNF-receptors, P55 and P75) were measured in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid and blood in 23 HIV-seropositive (HIV+) patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) and compared with values found in he...
متن کاملElectronic nose analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.
BACKGROUND Electronic nose (E-nose) technology has been successfully used to diagnose a number of microbial infections. We have investigated the potential use of an E-nose for the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) by detecting micro-organisms in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in a prospective comparative study of E-nose analysis and microbiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS BAL...
متن کاملInterleukin-8 and leukotriene B4 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from HIV-infected patients with bacterial pneumonia.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients are at increased risk of contracting bacterial infections, mainly pneumonia. Despite this, little is known about immunopathogenic mechanisms in HIV-related bacterial pneumonia. This paper investigates the presence of the neutrophil chemotactic mediators, interleukin-8 (IL_8) and leukotriene B4 (LTB4), in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid fro...
متن کاملEndotracheal aspirate and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis: interchangeable diagnostic modalities in suspected ventilator-associated pneumonia?
Authoritative guidelines state that the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) can be established using either endotracheal aspirate (ETA) or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) analysis, thereby suggesting that their results are considered to be in accordance. Therefore, the results of ETA Gram staining and semiquantitative cultures were compared to the results from a paired ETA-BA...
